Dolní Břežany lies south of Prague in the Praha-západ District. The municipality comprises four parts: Dolní Břežany, Jarov, Lhota and Zálepy. The first written reference to Dolní Břežany, or more precisely to its local stronghold, dates from 1332.

The Renaissance chateau belongs to the Prague Archbishopric. Following its restoration in 2016–2018, it became home to the four-star Chateau Clara Futura hotel. The acropolis of the Závist oppidum lies in the Lhota part of the municipality. The oppidum is the largest Celtic oppidum in Czechia and has been a national cultural monument since 1989.
